You could try stacking multiple blured shadows until the shadows look like a stroke, like so:

.shadowOutline {  text-shadow: 0 0 4px black, 0 0 4px black, 0 0 4px black, 0 0 4px black, 0 0 4px black, 0 0 4px black, 0 0 4px black, 0 0 4px black, 0 0 4px black, 0 0 4px black, 0 0 4px black, 0 0 4px black, 0 0 4px black, 0 0 4px black, 0 0 4px black, 0 0 4px black, 0 0 4px black, 0 0 4px black, 0 0 4px black, 0 0 4px black;}

I mention it just in case someone's interested, although I wouldn't call it a solution because it fails in various ways:

• it doesn't work in old IE
• it renders quite differently in every browser
• applying so many shadows is very heavy to process :S
